Code YDVVQA: a US$10 credit after your first purchase on DOPA's English site.

Best for

Adults who want DOPA in English with prices in US dollars, especially in the US or Canada, and who were going to buy credits anyway.

Take the free packs, and use the code only if you'll buy credits anyway. DOPA's English home page offers new accounts two free US$2 packs, and signing up with YDVVQA adds a US$10 credit (1,000pt) once you verify your phone and make a first purchase of any size. Credits pay for packs and shipping, never expire and can't be withdrawn or refunded. Every pull is a real card that you ship or convert within 10 days, and conversion pays 100% of the card's listed value. Shipping from Japan costs US$20 when the cards in a request are worth under US$10 and is free from US$100, plus a surcharge outside the US. Packs are random, so never buy credits to chase a card.

Pros

  • Two free US$2 packs for new accounts, no purchase needed

What a new English-site account gets

DOPA's English home page offers every new account two free US$2 packs. That is DOPA's own welcome offer and needs no purchase. Code YDVVQA adds a second reward: sign up through the English invite page, verify your phone and make a first credit purchase of any size, and DOPA adds a US$10 credit, shown as 1,000pt.

YDVVQA is our code, so once your first purchase goes through, DOPA gives us a US$10 credit (1,000pt) too. Welcome offers, first-purchase deals and invite rewards are once per person, and no more than two accounts per shipping address qualify for them.

New DOPA English-site account: two free US$2 packs advertised on the home page with no purchase needed; then sign up with YDVVQA, verify your phone and buy points of any amount for a US$10 credit (1,000pt). Credits have no cash value, no refunds and no expiry, and English-language cards ship to the US and Canada only

Why use the English site

DOPA has an English site for global users and a separate Chinese site for Hong Kong and Taiwan. The English site prices everything in US dollars, takes cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and its English terms are the version that controls if a translation ever differs. It is also where English-language card packs sit, and those cards ship only to the US and Canada; Japanese-language cards ship worldwide.

DOPA allows one account per person and shares rewards across accounts it links to you, so sign up once, on the site you'll actually use. Our DOPA Chinese-site review covers the other front door.

Your first purchase, worked through

Buy only the credits you had planned to spend. A US$10 first purchase through YDVVQA leaves you with US$20 of credit: ten pulls of a US$2 pack, or two of a US$10 one. DOPA charges every payment in US dollars, so if your card runs in pounds, euros or another currency, your card issuer's conversion fee applies.

DOPA's seven ranks add bonus credits to later purchases as your total spending grows. That rewards spending you were going to do anyway; it is not a reason to buy more.

How DOPA packs work

Each pull gives one physical card from a prize pool you can browse before you buy, with the odds for every card. Odds such as 1/30 mean one prize in 30 is that card. Packs also show a total return rate, which is the listed value of every card divided by the cost of pulling the whole pack, and some show a minimum return per pull.

Graded cards are delivered exactly as listed; ungraded cards are hand-picked in Lightly Played or better condition, and sealed boxes stay sealed. Every result is random, and a pack's return rate is an average over the whole pack, not what your pull will be worth.

Ship it or convert it

Each pull waits in My Cards for 10 days. Request shipping, or convert it to credits at 100% of its listed value; after 10 days DOPA converts it automatically, and both actions are final.

The base shipping fee depends on the total value of the cards in one request: US$20 under US$10, US$15 from US$10, US$10 from US$30 and free from US$100. An US$8 pull costs more to post on its own than it is worth, so convert pulls like that and keep the cards you want for one larger shipment. Your credits can pay the fee.

DOPA ship-or-convert examples by total card value in one request: US$8 converts to 800 credits against a US$20 base fee, so convert; US$25 converts to 2,500 credits against US$15, so ship with other pulls; US$45 converts to 4,500 credits against US$10; US$120 converts to 12,000 credits and ships with no base fee. A surcharge applies outside the US, and unrequested cards convert after 10 days

Shipping from Japan: time, duties and paperwork

DOPA's help centre says orders take about 1–2 weeks to prepare and ship, then 1–15 business days to arrive, with tracking. Its how-it-works page quotes 7–10 days door to door, so plan on the longer figure. Outside the US a surcharge is added to the base fee, and the shipping screen shows your total before you confirm.

You are the importer for customs purposes. Duties and carrier fees aren't included and can be billed to you, including on shipments from Japan to the US. The parcel can only go to you, under the legal name on your ID, aged 18 or over, with your own mobile number for customs. If a parcel comes back and you don't ask for re-shipment within 30 days, you lose the cards.

Credits, refunds and the fine print

Credits have no cash value: they can't be withdrawn, sold, transferred or converted to money, and DOPA doesn't refund purchases. They don't expire and carry no dormancy fees. Getting round DOPA's geo-blocking breaks the terms, and so does opening extra accounts for referral rewards.

DOPA is run by sinsa Inc. under Japanese law, with Yokohama District Court for disputes. You must be 18 or the age of majority where you live, whichever is higher; under-18s can't use it even with a parent's consent.

Our verdict: take the free packs, buy only what you planned

Open an account with YDVVQA if you're an adult who wants Japanese Pokémon or One Piece cards and prefers English: the two free packs cost nothing, and a first purchase you were going to make anyway earns an extra US$10.

Skip the purchase if you're after cash, can't decide within 10 days, or live outside the US and Canada and only want English-language cards, which won't ship to you. Every pull is random and can be worth less than it cost, so never buy credits to chase a card.
